How To Customize Office Lighting

Lighting a commercial office isn't like lighting a home. You can't bring in a funky lamp for a splash of color, and you're usually restricted by the style, budget and architectural design of your company. So what can you do if you're interested in new office lighting? How can you make changes without running afoul of building codes? Here are just a few ideas for modern office lighting.

1. Change Your Bulbs

This is one of the easiest ways to do something different with your office lighting. Instead of using traditional halogen bulbs, replace them with compact florescent lights (CFLs) that give off the same brightness while only using a fraction of the energy. Not only will they help the environment, but they'll save you money on your utility bills, too.

2. Think About Color

Most offices are lit by neutral white bulbs that accommodate everyone. If you have your own cubicle, however, or if your colleagues are willing to make changes with you, you might consider switching your white lights for colored ones. Yellow tones can be very soothing, and blue tones have been known to increase cognitive function in the brain.

3. Open the Windows

Natural light is better than any artificial light on the market. As a bonus, an open window will also let fresh air into the office and perk everyone up from their daily stupor. Just be sure that things like sunrises and sunsets won't cast glares on computer screens when people are trying to work.

4. Customize It

You might not be able to bring in that crazy mosaic lamp that you found at the local thrift shop, but there's no reason why people can't have their own sleek little desk lamps. This will enable them to dim or brighten their illumination levels as they see fit. They're sure to appreciate the flexibility.

These are just a few tips for office lighting. Even small changes can have big impacts, so don't worry if you have to take things slowly. Maybe start with replacement light sockets and work your way up to widespread florescent light bars.
